Floods damage crops and homes in Tonj North County

Floods that swept Tonj North County in Warrap State of South Sudan earlier this week caused major damages to houses and crops in the region, resulting in poor sanitary and health conditions.

Marco Woog Kuac, commissioner of Tonj North County, in a statement to Radio Tamazuj said that the floods that swept through the county after the rainfall over the weekend caused damage to houses and damaged all the crops especially beans and sesame crops.

Kuac also stated that the floods covered seven of the county’s nine administrative units, closing all the roads into the affected areas.

Beside this is he pointed out to the spread of various diseases among the citizens, stressing the deterioration of health situations, in the total absence of any relief assistance from either authorities or humanitarian organizations.

“I reported this health situation, lack of medications and mosquito nets to the authorities, and we are still waiting for them to assess the situation,” he said.

On the other hand, Akec Ayuen Alio, Deputy Governor Warab State, stressed that there are efforts by the state authorities for the relief of those affected by the floods.

Alio in an interview with Radio Tamazuj stated that after the report issued by the authorities of Tonj North County there is a committee has been formed from the ministries of rural development and physical infrastructure to go and assess the situation of the floods caused by the water, and to open drainage channels on cultivated lands.

“We have sent a team with engineers to work on the roads, so we are serious and working hard to stop the water from the agricultural projects and the citizen,” he said.

He revealed that the committee has been sent out into the three counties to manage the situation, and appealed to all the citizens to work side by side with the government to control the water. Alio added that they have distributed tools for citizens to dig channels to drain water.

Separately, it is reported that a citizen has been killed and two others wounded in a cattle raid in Twic County, in the northernmost part of the state.

The deputy governor pointed blame at armed men from Unity State, telling Radio Tamazuj that the accident occurred on Mondayin, Twic County.
