Fire rages through South Sudanese refugee camp in Sudan

A fire destroyed hundreds of homes in the South Sudanese refugee camp in Haj-Yousif in Khartoum. No one was killed.

Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out on Wednesday evening in one of the refugee houses and spread quickly through the heart of the camp. More than 80 families lost all of their belongings and they have not yet been offered any assistance.

“The plates broke in the fire, the cups broke in the fire,” said one eyewitness. “Nothing remained except for the solid iron, which a fire can’t destroy.”

The refugees living in the camp are part of a voluntary repatriation program to South Sudan.
