Family demand to know reason for ‘abduction’ of man in Yei

The family of a man who went missing in Yei in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State have demanded to know his whereabouts and the reason for his ‘abduction’ along with two other men.

In a petition to the mayor, the family of Mawa Malish Isaac said that he was abducted on 24 November in Yei by unknown gunmen and taken away in a vehicle with SPLA Commando colors.

These gunmen came to the house of a man called Juma Samuel in Hai Peace, Yei town and took away him, Mawa and another man, according to the petition.

Although the gunmen were not identified, “Onlookers identified their vehicle as being a military pick-up designed with commando uniform colors.”

“As a family, we have a confidence in the leadership of municipality and the county at large, regarding the matters of security. However, we are saddened by the slow process of letting us know his whereabouts and why he was abducted,” the family members added.

Thirteen family members who signed the statement warned that if such a disappearance could happen to their relative then it could also happen to any other family in Yei.

They said it was unsettling that someone can “just disappear for more than one week without the knowledge of security apparatus.”

Contacted for comment, a Central Equatoria state official said he was not yet ready to say anything about the matter.
