Dozens of families affected by floods in Jur River County of Western Bahr el Ghazal State are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

Addressing the press upon the arrival of a delegation from the national ministry of humanitarian affairs in Wau, the state Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner Barsom Musa said the people in affected areas have moved to higher ground empty-handed. 

“Six areas, the bomas are affected by the floods, people suffering in Alel-Thony and this was during my visit up to now. I tried with the NGOs to go but these organizations always take their reports to Juba and everywhere and I am appealing to those heading organizations to come down to us," Musa said.

“People are suffering so much and right now people with children are in critical condition of malaria, it is now 10 days after my visit,” he added. 

Speaking on behalf of the national ministry of humanitarian affairs, undersecretary Koot Bol Nyuol said their visit to the Bahr el Ghazal region is to assess the level of floods and the influx of displaced persons from Tambura violence in Wau.

“We received a briefing from the RRC chairperson regarding the humanitarian situation in the state, of course, this is a part of our general visit to the areas affected by the floods," said Nyuol. "The floods are devastating and the impact is currently on the people, both on livelihoods as well as the living conditions. Farms have been destroyed, houses fallen and you can imagine, it is trouble." 

He mentioned that the ministry is currently mobilizing resources to help the people affected across the country.

“We are currently mobilizing the whole country and our partners, the UN agencies such that they can help us in mitigating the impacts of the floods,” Nyuol added.    

The delegation to the Bahr el Ghazal region was led by the national Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Peter Mayen Majongdit.
