The European Union announced Thursday that it will levy sanctions against two military leaders who have violated the ceasefire in South Sudan.

"Today, the EU has...decided to adopt as a first step restrictive measures against individuals responsible for obstructing the IGAD-led peace process, breaching the ceasefire and committing egregious human rights violations," read a statement from Brussels.

"The two persons responsible for violating the ceasefire agreement will be targeted with a travel ban and a freeze of their assets in the European Union. At the same time, an existing arms embargo against South Sudan will remain in place."

The EU will announce the names of the two military leaders tomorrow when the measures come into force.

In May, the United States levied asset freezes and travel bans against Marial Chanuong, the head of Salva Kiir's presidential guard, and Peter Gadet, a general in the SPLM-In Opposition led by Riek Machar.

The sanctions are "part of wider EU efforts to stop violence and avoid further instability in the region," the statement read.
