The Ethiopian government has accepted to keep South Sudanese students in the country, provided that they are supported by their government, an official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, South Sudan’s Minister of Higher Education Denay Jock Chagor clarified that the financial support would only benefit students who are on government scholarships.

“I spoke with the Ethiopian minister for Higher Education and the Education minister and they have allowed our students to be there. The government of South Sudan will take care of their feeding and they will be allowed to stay in their campuses,” said Chagor.

He disclosed that the government has already extended its financial support to 500 students on government scholarships through South Sudan’s embassy in Ethiopia.

“We are very happy with the cooperation from the Ethiopian government,” he added.

The minister revealed that the financial support would also be provided to students in Zimbabwe and other parts of the world.

The Ethiopian government recently ordered all foreign students who are studying in the country to leave due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, the government of South Sudan agreed to offer $3 million to its students who are studying in the coronavirus-affected countries.
