Dissent in Wau over ‘president’s initiative’ to transfer capital

A group of Western Bahr El Ghazal citizens have raised objections to the proposed transfer of the national capital from Juba to Wau. The idea has been pushed by the state governor, Rizik Zachariah.

Voice of Hope FM in Wau reports that the citizens objected to the capital transfer saying the idea “was [the] President's initiative, not citizens’.”

At a recent cabinet meeting, Advisor on Essential Services Andal Wathadala read out a letter from the citizens’ group addressed to the governor, complaining that South Sudanese were not consulted on the proposal.

In their letter, the group “recommended federalism as the only solution to the entire problems of the country, arguing that through the system, the president’s power over the state would be limited,” Voice of Hope reports.

The state government is yet to comment on the matter.
