Displaced person shot outside UN 'protection of civilians' site in Juba

A displaced person was shot and wounded outside the United Nations 'Protection of Civilians' site in the South Sudan capital Juba on Monday.

Multiple fellow displaced people confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that Deng Ruay Gatluak was shot by unknown gunmen while standing in front of the UN base in Jebel. The base is manned by armed peacekeepers mandated to protect civilians.

The sources noted that Deng was rushed to Juba Teaching Hospital and later transferred to Juba Medical Complex where he is under treatement.

“His health condition was seriously deteriorating on Monday evening. Gatluak was shot by unknown assailants at around seven o’clock in the evening just in front of the United Nations refugee camp," one of the displaced persons said.

Separately, the sources said that three young men were arrested by security agents last Saturday in the same location as the shooting. They said the three men were released after spending one night in jail where they were harassed and beaten by police forces.

A spokesperson for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan said yesterday that they are seeking more information on the matter when Radio Tamazuj asked whether they know about these incidents and whether they have stepped up security in the area in response.
