People from Cuiebet County in Lakes State say that they require police protection when they travel to the state capital Rumbek, owing to inter-clan violence.

“Students, traders and county officials commuting from Cuiebet to Rumbek have been sleeping at the police headquarters in Rumbek town, since five people were killed in ambush last week, at a place called Mayath, along the Cuiebet-Rumbek road,” Radio Miraya reported yesterday.

Cuiebet community elder Joseph Maker Mathiang said his people are living in fear of revenge attacks. He said his people came to the police station “for a rescue.”

“They came here for safety because if they go back to their normal houses or places they will still be hunted. I hope if there is a proper security arrangement people can remain together as they were before.”

Another Cuiebet native speaking on Radio Miraya, student Moses Mading, said the government needs to secure roads to prevent ambushes of travelers going to Rumbek: “There is a strong need for the government to take a force there, especially at Abear… the government needs to take care of this road. It has lost a lot of lives.”

He blamed ‘gangs’ for ambushes against students from Cuiebet.

Meanwhile, in Rumbek town, Inspector of Health Makur Ater Akony says there are “more than 500” dogs in the town, some of which are rabid. He says the animals are attracted to the meat in butcheries and slaughterhouses.
