Citizens in South Sudan’s northernmost town of Renk in Upper Nile report pollution of the water being supplied by the Urban Water Corporation in the area.

Water Department Director Gareng Dut speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday denied the claims. He said that the water supply is drinkable, but admitted there was slight change in the colour of water recently. 

He attributed the problem to flooding overflow of Asheer Stream near the water station in the town. Garang said that the colour of water has changed to dark.

However, Garang pointed out that the water was tested in Sudan’s White Nile state where it was confirmed that it is good for human use.

Several citizens resorted to using rainwater for household chores and drinking purposes instead of the discolored water.

The official expressed concern about the use of water from streams, which he described as “unhealthy.”

He urged local residents not to fear the water supply, saying it was sterilized.

“The problem is that people fetch water from streams. So that is very dangerous because it might be harmful,” he said.
