Renk has initiated a cleanup campaign owing to the accumulation of rubbish in depopulated and deserted parts of the town. In recent months thousands of locals crossed to Sudan after fighting reached the area.

A source told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the majority of homes have been deserted. This prompted local authorities to carry out a two-week long campaign to clean the whole town.

Executive Director in Renk County Ahmed Akuei Ajak said they carried out a campaign to clear the town from litter.

He stated that the campaign covered the markets and all residential areas in order to improve the image of the town, adding the campaign will continue for two weeks.

Ajak attributed the accumulation of waste in the town to the absence of residents due to insecurity in the area.
