Clash reported in Megenis border area

Fighting broke out between militia opposed to the South Sudanese government and the Sudanese military in Megenis area yesterday morning, according to a local source.

Jebel Megenis, a mountain at the corner of three states, is an agricultural area along the disputed border between South Sudan and Sudan.

The clash caused the displacement of many civilians from Megenis to at-Tartar, the Tadamon Locality headquarters. This locality, which is not to be confused with Tadamon Locality of Blue Nile State, was formed in 2012 in the eastern part of South Kordofan bordering White Nile State.

Last month another clash occurred nearby at Hamra in White Nile State between two southern rebel forces, those of Commander Onyek Ogweti and those of Gen. Philip Digin who is affiliated to Gen. Gordon Kong Chol.

Many southern opposition fighters who were based in South Kordofan defected to South Sudan in recent months after reaching an amnesty deal with the Juba government.

Radio Tamazuj was unable to reach the Sudanese military for comment on this news.
