Chief Apareer Chut, an elder brother of Lakes State Caretaker governor Matur Chut Dhuol, was shot dead yesterday in Pacong Payam of Lakes State.

The chief was killed on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. The killer was uniformed and he escaped the scene of the crime and remains at large, according to Jok Ayom, Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement.

The law enforcement official told Radio Tamazuj that the family of the deceased organized to take revenge for the killing of the chief, but the authorities intervened to control the situation, he claimed, saying the situation in the state is stable.

However, there are concerns of the possibility of further violence.

Good News Radio in Rumbek reports that the late Apareer Chut was paramount chief of three chieftaincies of the Athoi clans of Rumbek East County.

The station reports also that an army contingent was dispatched to Rumbek East County to quell possible inter-clan fights due to the killing.
