Blue Nile farmers accuse banks of favoritism

Farmers in Sudan’s Blue Nile state have complained that commercial banks are giving preferential treatments to certain farmers.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Monday, several farmers from Damazin town said that Family Bank, Agricultural Bank, and the Microfinance Program loan 15,000 to 20,000 Sudanese pounds to some farmers and 50,000 pounds to others.

A farmer who preferred anonymity described the funding policy by commercial banks as unfair, saying the extra support to farmers was linked with political affiliations.

“You know, members of the ruling National Congress Party are the ones being favored and recommended by the People's Committee leaders in their respective residential areas,” the farmer said.

The two banks and the Microfinance Program introduced new borrowing policies in May.
