Bishop: Wonduruba peace deal not guaranteed to stick

The Episcopal cleric who brokered the Wonduruba Peace Agreement cautioned that the signed deal may not hold because citizens still fear SPLA soldiers deployed in the area.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Thursday, Bishop Paul Yugusuk, said the Central Equatoria government must show commitment.

“If the government doesn’t commit itself, the peace agreement will not hold, and there is no guarantee because the citizens still fear from the SPLA,” he said.

Central Equatorian leaders previously accused the SPLA of terrorizing civilians in Wonduruba.

The religious leader called on the state authorities to dispatch the civil administration and police to Wonduruba payam as soon as possible.

Separately, Yugusuk said the SPLA had stolen the citizens' food stockpiles and the people were experiencing deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

The mediator appealed to the state government to send humanitarian aid urgently to the area.
