AU inquiry panel extends term in South Sudan

The African Union Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan will continue its work for at least another three months, after extension of its mandate.

In a press release yesterday, the African Union explained that the mandate was renewed at the 23rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU held in Malabo from 26 to 27 June.

This followed the commission’s presentation of an interim report to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, in which the commission asked for more time to complete its task.

“The Commission’s request for extension of time was justified by the need to conduct more extensive consultations with different sectors of South Sudanese Society in all the 10 states as well as the Diaspora and to finalize investigations,” reads the press release.

The inquiry panel is tasked with investigating violations of human rights and humanitarian law committed in South Sudan since December, and making recommendations relating to healing, reconciliation, accountability, and institutional reforms.

The Commission’s Interim Report is available here. The e-mail contact of the commission is auciss@africa-union.org.
