UN agencies and non-governmental organizations have recently undertaken to expand humanitarian operations into several previously unreached areas of Jonglei, South Sudan’s largest state.

In its latest update, released yesterday, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported, “multi-sector rapid response operations continued in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states.”

OCHA noted that a team of aid workers recently travelled to Kaldak in northern Jonglei State, to respond to needs among displaced communities in Pigi County.

“The initial response in these locations covers immediate needs for child protection, education, food assistance, nutrition and water and sanitation,” reads the update.

There is a significant population recently displaced within Pigi County. According to the UN agency, about 7,000 people are children, who now do not have access to education. The UN says that 21 closed schools were closed in Pigi/Canal County.

Elsewhere in Jonglei, the UN prepared 2,000 emergency crop kits for airdrop in Pochalla and made plans to distribute another 1,000 in Pibor.

In Gorwai, Lankien and Magok, aid workers are carrying out registrations and food distributions.

Aid workers also provided nearly 1000 blankets to children in Bor, to help them cope with wet weather, while a similar effort is considered around Yuai.
