15 traffic deaths in Yei since last year

The traffic police of Yei in Central Equatoria State say that 15 people have died in traffic accidents and others were wounded in the period 2013-2014. The police say there have been more than 400 roads accidents from 2013 until now.

Emmanuel Duku, the acting chief of traffic police in Yei County said the accidents are mostly caused by bodabodas (motorcycles) over-speeding in public.

“The first reason for these accidents is over-speeding, in the majority of fatal cases the cause is over-speeding, whether in the town or outside of it,” he said, noting the police have impounded about 385 motorcycles that were involved in accidents.

He also blamed the lack of safety equipment such as indicators and side mirrors on motorcycles and also drunken driving.

The official said they wished to run safety courses to instruct motorcycle riders how to ride safely.

He also urged the government of Central Equatoria State to provide them with a vehicle to help them carry out their work, saying they had no vehicle at the traffic police station.
