Youth Peace Makers (YPM) is one of the youth groups in Torit town who did not wait for white-collar jobs and ventured into agriculture.

Unlike their peers, who shun farming, the group comprising of 10 youth pursued opportunities in agribusiness instead of spending many years looking for employment which is not easy to find in South Sudan.

They planted eggplants, green pepper, groundnuts, among other crops in Enyif area after being supported by the Whitaker Peace Development Initiative (WPDI), a non-governmental organization.

Omal Godfrey Jackson, the youth group’s secretary, told Radio Tamazuj that they earn between 15,000 and 20,000 SSP from every sack of vegetable sold in the market.

“Even communities in the area will benefit from the produces that are taking to the market for sale,” he explained.

Omal said the group was formed this year to economically empower local youth.

Salva Boutros, a business tutor at WPDI, urged the youth to work hard and avoid over dependency to reduce crime rates in the area.

“This country is in the hands of youth. Nobody can get food on the table without work, except if one struggles to work,” he said.

Boutros urged the concerned authorities to ensure the locals get business opportunities.
