Yei FM radio station goes off air due to technical problems

Spirit FM, a Christian community radio station operating in South Sudan’s Yei River State is off air, its manager said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the station manager, Patrick Yega cited a technical problem in the radio’s transmission system.

The only transmitter, he said, failed to ignite power since Monday.

“The radio went off air since Monday this week and has affected our operations and public access to information. The transmitter is old and requires servicing or replacement with a new one,” said Yega.

The station, he added, lacks a standby transmitter and was given a letter by the information ministry to transport it to Kampala, Uganda.

Yega urged organizations supporting media programs to assist Spirit FM with a new transmitter to enable the station inform the local population on needs to co-exist peacefully and access information.

“We hope the situation can be addressed and we call on our media partners to help us,” he added.

The radio, which broadcasts on 99.9 FM, remains one of the most preferred local stations in the state with a huge number of listeners.
