Wau Islamic Council accused of selling public space

Some Muslims while performing the Eid Al-Fitr prayers on Sunday at Al-Mowlid Square, in Wau the capital of Western Bahr El Ghazal State, complained about some buildings constructed for investment especially at Al Mowlid Square in Wau, where Muslims used to perform their religious rituals.

Sheikh Tayeb Akej Rizkallah in his Eid speech disapproved the buildings’ construction in Mowlid square, accusing members of the Islamic Council of approving the construction.

For his part, Mohamed Issa, Secretary-General of the Islamic Council in Western Bahr el Ghazal State said that those who sold some Islamic Awgaf are Muslims from northern Sudan who were working in the Islamic Council, Western Bahr el Ghazal before the independence of the Republic of South Sudan.

Issa denied the sale of some areas in Al Mowlid Square adding that they had allocated and specified some areas in the square for building shops for investment to solve some issues regarding planning and managing of the square.

Rizik Zacharia, Western Bahr el Ghazal State Governor, who was attending the Eid prayers, addressed the attendees saying that the square needs government approval to be constructed on. He asked them “not to take their rights with their hands” saying that the issue of Al Mowlid square will be resolved by the government. The governor asked all the religious leaders to play positive roles, and to be advocates for peace “because when religion is politicized it will mislead us.”
