US calls for immediate humanitarian access to conflict areas

The US Committee on Foreign Relations passed a draft resolution on Tuesday calling for immediate humanitarian access to the troubled states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile state.

The resolution demands the Sudanese government stops blocking food aid for more than quarter of a million people facing the very real prospect of starvation in the next few weeks as the rainy season begins.

Some residents that fled fighting remain trapped in the country and have not been able to plant crops for the coming season out of fear of spending time in the open where the Sudanese army is accused of sustained air strikes against civilians as well as fighting opposition groups.
