UN vehicle knocks prison officer dead in Yambio

The traffic police in Yambio, Western Equatoria State, on Monday arrested the driver of a UN vehicle after he knocked a prison warder dead.

The vehicle with registration number UN44173 knocked and killed the prison warder, David Mama, at 2:35 pm in Yambio East.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj today, the director of traffic police in Western Equatoria State, Colonel Santo Arkangelo Ginana, said the UN driver has been arrested and that investigation is ongoing.

“For sure yesterday at 2:35 pm the report came to me in the office that a prison warder called David Mama who is 50 years old was knocked dead and we were surprised because he is a senior government official. The car and driver are all with me in custody and the investigation is going on. The car belongs to the UN,” Col. Ginana said.

According to the traffic police boss, neither the driver nor the prison officer was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident but he said that the UN vehicle was speeding.

“In the town of Yambio, there are no reports of serious accidents. We have minor accidents, but not like the one of yesterday. It was too serious which led to death,” Col. Ginana said.

He urged drivers to watch their speed while driving in the town and said anyone found speeding will be arrested.

A relative of the deceased who only identified themselves as Rakamsita said since the errant driver has been arrested they will not revenge.

“We will not do what people do in other places that when your brother is killed you will go for revenge. As South Sudanese, we need to refrain from such behavior,” Rakamsita said. “We will not leave the case because this man has children and we need the UN to do something for those children. How will they survive from now on?”
