The chairperson of Torit chamber of commerce has criticized a move by town officials to reduce prices of goods in the market saying the market prices are determined by many factors.

Last week, Torit Municipal Council formed a committee comprising 5 people to assess, investigate and reduce the rising prices in Torit market saying the prices should reduce due to the drop in dollar rates.

Lily Hidita Nartisio, chairperson of the chamber of commerce in Torit said the prices of goods will drop with time.

“There is no way one is asked to reduce the prices of goods due to a drop in the value of the dollar. All the traders who bought their goods using dollars now have no money in the state and the goods are in store. Secondly the market is no performing well,” she said.

“We face a lot of challenges. Sometimes you can stay up to two weeks on the road and you have to pay taxes. These are losses and business is bad when there are losses,” Hidita added.

She called on the government authorities to cooperate with the business community to be able to provide goods and services to the people at reasonable prices, saying the value of the dollar is also not predictable and may go up anytim
