Sudan appeals court upholds death sentence against student charged with murder

A court of appeals in Sudan’s capital Khartoum on Tuesday upheld the death sentence against the university student Asim Omar for the alleged killing of a policeman during protests last year.

Omar, a student at the University of Khartoum, was convicted under article 103 of the Sudanese Penal Code on charges of premeditated murder punishable by death.

Omar was part of a student protest that led to the death of one policeman. He is also a member of the Independent Student’s Congress which is a student branch of the opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCP).

Asim’s defense lawyer said that the court of appeals upheld the death sentence and that they will study the verdict before they could refer the matter to the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) on Tuesday warned against carrying out the death penalty against Asim.

In a press statement, the opposition party said that Asim is innocent, vowing to resist the court ruling until all rights to appeal have been exhausted.
