South Sudanese peace activist Rita M. Lopidia on Tuesday was awarded the Women Building Peace Award by the United States Institute of Peace, USIP.

Ms. Lopidia, who is the executive director and co-founder of the Eve Organization for Women Development was awarded for her efforts in pursuing peace in South Sudan.

She received the award during a virtual ceremony hosted by USIP. She was among 10 finalists selected by the Women Building Peace Council from more than 150 nominees representing 51 countries.

“USIP is proud to honor Ms. Lopidia with the inaugural Women Building Peace Award. Her commitment to nonviolent action, inclusive leadership, and fearless advocacy embody the spirit of this award,” said Joe Lataille, the Institute’s acting president and chief financial officer in a statement on their website.

Megan Beyer, co-chair of the Women Building Peace Council said, “In today’s complicated, turbulent world, women like Ms. Lopidia remind us what’s possible. We are so proud to honor her with this well-deserved recognition.”

Ms. Lopidia will receive $10,000 in prize money and will be recognized by the institute during a celebration next year.
