South Africa's food donation reaches Western Lakes

Food items donated by the South African government have safely reached South Sudan’s Western Lakes State, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Gabriel Julla Allajabo, the director general in the state ministry of gender said 400 vulnerable people benefited from the donation. "We have distributed this food to vulnerable groups in Rumbek, but it was not enough because other parts of the state were not reached,” he explained.

Allajabo said the next phase of food distribution will not target the vulnerable people living in state capital, Rumbek, but be directly channeled to vulnerable communities in the 11 counties of the state.

According to the official, the returnees from Khartoum, now residing in the Nyatiik-Angui, Abubou, Nyanykot areas are the most affected.

He said the second phase of food distribution will be done by World Food Programme (WFP) once all vulnerable people are registered.

Meanwhile, Allajabo denied allegations that food items meant for the vulnerable people in the state were instead distributed to wives and families of state ministers and lawmakers.

In August last year, food items donated by the South African government reached Yei River State.
