Situation in Abyei is desperate

The chairman of the Abyei Relief Coordination Committee, Deng Kuol Majok described the humanitarian situation in Abyei as desperate and urgently requiring help.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj Majok said citizens that fled attacks by the Sudanese government in the last few months had become homeless and living in the open since that time.

He said international relief organizations are not allowed to operate in the area without permission from the Sudanese government, preventing the entry of adequate food and health supplies to the region.

He said the region is in dire need of food and medicine despite the best efforts of organizations such as Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) and the World Food Programme.
