Russia says peaceful settlement still reachable

The Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said there is a possibility for peaceful negotiation between Sudan and South Sudan.

In a joint news conference with his Sudanese counterpart Ali Karti in Moscow Lavrov said, ‘we are confident that the necessary conditions to ease tensions between Khartoum and Juba are available.’

Lavrov stressed the need for the UN security council resolution threatening sanctions to be ‘balanced and fair’.

He also said the African Union remains the lead party in helping both sides to reach a settlement.
