Lecturers at Rumbek University have threatened to suspend examinations if the government doesn’t pay them their outstanding salaries.

Exams started on December 4 and will run until December 18.

Mathew Malou, a lecturer at Rumbek University, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the lecturers resolved that they will not participate in invigilating exams if their demands are met.

Malou says they have received the first payment of the new salary structure, appealing to the government to clear the remaining four-month arrears.

He further said they have given the national government until December 9 to clear their outstanding salaries or else they will be forced to suspend the ongoing exams.

On November 27, lecturers at the university declared a one week strike in protest over delay in payment of their five-month salaries.

In July, South Sudan cabinet approved a proposed increment in the salaries of lecturers in the country’s five public universities, citing the deterioration of the local currency against hard currencies.
