River transport between Bor and Juba resumes after boat accident

Transport along the Nile between South Sudan’s capital, Juba and Jonglei State has resumed after it was suspended for a day following last week’s deadly boat accident.

At least 10 people died after a boat sank along the Nile River, close to the area of Pariak in Jonglei State last week.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, the Secretary General for Jonglei Boats Union, Elijah Thongbor said transport resumed with precautionary measures in place to avoid similar occurrences.

“We resumed since last week after the operations were suspended for more than 24 hours. We resumed on condition that no one will sail during the night hours. We will only operate between 8 am and 6 pm,” he said.

He added, “The investigations into the incident are still ongoing”.

Thongbor said those who defy government’s order will be punished. He assured river transport users of safety, saying authorities and boat owners have put in place precautionary measures to save lives.
