South Sudan police have arrested two prime suspects in the murder of a lecturer at the University of Juba last month.

Bol Chol, a law lecturer at the University of Juba, was shot dead by unknown gunmen while on his way home in Juba's Gudele neighbourhood. He was killed on 12 January.

Police Spokesman Daniel Justin told Radio Tamazuj today that two prime suspects in the killing of the university lecturer were arrested last Friday.

He disclosed that the two suspects were flushed out of their hideouts in Rumbek, saying the two men were arrested and transported to the capital Juba for interrogation.

"The two prime suspects include the person who killed the late lecturer and his boda-boda driver," he explained.

Justin revealed that one of the prime suspects has been identified as John Makur Mabior. "The two prime suspects will be arraigned in court. They are expected to appear before the court soon," he said.

The senior police officer further said they had arrested 11 other suspects during investigations into the incident. "Those 11 people are expected to be acquitted because they were arrested by police authorities during the course of investigations," Maj Gen. Justin explained.

Separately, Daniel Justin has assured South Sudanese of maximum security as political leaders prepare to form a transitional government of national unity this month.

"Our forces are providing protection to citizens. I want to assure the public that the security situation is stable generally, so people shouldn’t worry," he said.
