NGO urges investigation into killing of gold miners in Eastern Equatoria

Support Peace Initiative Development Organization (SPIDO), a local non-governmental organization, has urged the government to investigate the recent killing of five gold miners in Kapeota South County of Eastern Equatoria State.

The incident took place on August 18 in the area of Nakwasigirya, which is located about 30 kilometres south of Kapoeta town.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Wodcan Savior Lazarus, the Executive Director for SPIDO condemned the killing of the gold miners.

“As an organization focusing on access to justice and human rights, it is really shocking to us to hear the killing of innocent lives. We strongly condemn the incident,” said Wodcan.

He added, “We are calling on the authorities to take serious actions by expediting investigations into this case, and the perpetrators should be brought to book. We really need to know those behind the killings.”

Major General Anthony Adil, the director of police in the defunct Kapoeta State, said no one has so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

“We opened a case and investigations are ongoing. We also issued an arrest warrant, but we are yet to find the suspects,” he added.
