Local NGO aids farmers with seeds in Yei and Morobo

Mission to Alleviate Suffering in South Sudan (MASS), a local non-governmental organization, is in partnership with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) distributed seeds to farmers in Morobo and Yei River counties of Central Equatoria State.

Dara Elias, the Executive Director of MASS, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the project is aimed at providing quality and quick maturing crop and vegetable seeds to farmers to boost the levels of food production in the second crop production season.

“In this second season, we have started giving out seeds to the farmers. The lockdown should not stop us from farming. Farmers need to engage in farming to fight food insecurity, and let them continue planting and preparing their farms,” he explained.

Joseph Mawa, a farmer in Mugwo Payam of Yei River County, expressed his happiness with the seed distribution.

“We are very happy because MASS has been helping us with seeds throughout the years of conflict in Yei. We received maize, groundnuts, sorghum and vegetable seeds including onions, cabbage and okra for our second crop planting season,” he said.

Recently, officials from the Agriculture ministry appealed to NGOs to continue providing farm tools and seeds to farmers to help in the fight against food insecurity.
