Living conditions deteriorating in Kurmuk, Blue Nile

The people of Bau and other areas in west Kurmuk in Blue Nile state are suffering from deteriorating living conditions. The authorities described the conditions as 'poor' at a time when the number of deaths per day among children increased to 10. A disaster is threatening to happen in the region, unless humanitarian aid organizations are allowed to enter the region where thousands of people are waiting for help.

El-Simawi Adlan, humanitarian affairs official in Blue Nile state, stated that after a survey of SPLM controlled areas in west Kurmuk and El-Bau, there are around 200 thousand people in different parts of west Kurmuk living under poor conditions, from a humanitarian perspective. El-Simawi added that Khartoum (the government) insists not to allow aid organizations to enter the region. This has resulted in a lack of food and widespread hunger. He appealed to the United Nations and human rights organizations to pressure Khartoum to allow organizations to deliver relief to those in need.
