Lack of funds hinders service delivery for Jonglei inmates: official

Lack of funds is hampering delivery of basic needs for inmates in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, the prison director said.

Alfred Manyang Agok told Radio Tamazuj Monday that inmates in the state lack medicines, adequate food and beds.

“Those days, we offered three meals per day. Now, due to limited resources, we only offer one meal. We also lack beds for inmates, no drugs at our clinic and there are cracks on walls of Bor Central prison,” said Manyang.

Sick inmates, he added, are taken to Bor Hospital and private clinics.

Manyang further said Bor Central Prison has 235 inmates while the greater Duk and Twic counties have 83. He said that the situation of inmates is worsening due to overcrowding in the prisons.

The official said they would embark on agriculture to tackle the challenges.
