IPU-IGAD delegation meets MPs in Juba over peace implementation

A delegation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union of IGAD countries (IPU-IGAD) held a joint meeting with members of South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly on Thursday in Juba where they discussed matters concerning implementation of the signed peace agreement.

In a press statement after the meeting, Haile Adhana, head of the visiting delegation said that they met with parliamentarians and discussed the implementation of the signed peace agreement.

He pointed out that the meeting also touched on issues pertaining to reforms after the formation of the transitional parliament, besides the implementation of the 2012 Joint Cooperation Agreements between Sudan and South Sudan.

Haile described the decision by Kenya to withdraw its peacekeeping and disengage from the peace process in South Sudan is “legitimate”. However, he noted that the move could negatively affect South Sudan.

For his part, Tulio Odongi, chairman of the SPLM parliamentary caucus welcomed the visiting delegation, saying their meeting discussed several issues especially the withdrawal of Kenyan peacekeepers from South Sudan.
