An unknown gunman shot and killed an inmate in Cueibet County of Lakes State on Monday, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the Executive Director of Cueibet County, Mamer Thokgor said Goljok Makuac Abdalla was killed by an unknown gunman in Cueibet County.

“The inmate was killed while on his way from the prison to Cueibet hospital for treatment. The government has now arrested the prison officer who allowed the inmate to travel alone without any escort,” Mamer explained.

He said the situation remains calm as police officers at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) continue investigating the incident.

“The incident appears to be a revenge killing, but the victim was not the target. He was killed accidentally,” he added.

The official said the deceased, whose case was before the High Court, had been arrested on suspicion of killing someone last year.

He appealed to relatives of the deceased to remain calm and allow authorities to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrator to book.
