Floods have destroyed homes in parts of Akobo County in Jonglei State, displacing more than 5,000 people, a local official said.

Stephen Ojulo, the Executive Director of the defunct Alali County, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the flood-affected residents have been living in the open for weeks without food and healthcare services.

“All areas to the east of Akobo River are affected by floods.  In Alali area and the surrounding villages, more than 5, 000 people whose homes were destroyed by floods since last month stay in the open,” Ojulo said.

He added, “The floods are due to heavy rains and the overflow of Akobo and Gilo rivers. All livelihoods have been destroyed. Residents now live without food, shelters and healthcare services.”

The local official urged the government and aid agencies to intervene.

Meanwhile, John Opiew Olok, a lawmaker representing the area in the state legislative assembly appealed for assistance, saying the flood-affected families may be forced to return to Ethiopia if not aided.

Last month, South Sudan’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) warned that thousands of people displaced by floods and conflict could face serious food shortages if they are not supported.
