A team of eye surgeons has pitched camp in South Sudan’s Tonj State to provide affordable eye care.

The medical camp which started on Tuesday is expected to run through the week.

One of the surgeons John Majok told Radio Tamazuj that the team of 6 surgeons expects to perform more than 300 cataract operations by the end of the week.

Majok said they had operated about 30 patients on Tuesday afternoon including the state governor.

He explained that cataract is one of the main causes of blindness and the operation is mostly performed on the elderly who have slightly or fully lost their sight.

Tonj state minister of health and environment Abak Yel said patients are only required to pay a subsidized fee of 2000 SSP for the operations, saying the fee is affordable.
