EU condemns Haroun's 'take no prisoners' order

EU foreign affairs commissioner Catherine Ashton has strongly denounced the statements made by the governor of South Kordofan last week telling Sudanese soldiers to 'take no prisoners' when fighting opponents.

In a statement Ashton said 'a deliberate policy of taking no prisoners during armed conflict constitutes a war crime.'

She called for Khartoum to respect the Geneva Convention and international laws which prohibit officials from giving orders to bring back no survivors.

The video of Ahmed Haroun was secretly filmed by the Al Jazeera news channel.

Haroun is wanted by the international criminal court for his part in war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed against Darfuri citizens since 2003.
