Doctor for Blue Nile refugees says ‘catastrophe’ still growing

One of the health authorities in Maban County warned of deterioration of the health situation among Blue Nile refugees in Jamam, Doro and Yusuf Batil camps amid great fears of a health catastrophe.

The head of Bunj hospital Dr. Evan Atar told Radio Tamazuj from Maban that the health situation in the region was in peril due to an increase in the number of malaria cases along with malnutrition and diarrhea.

He stated that number of cases of killer diseases continues to increase in the hospital amid lack of medical staff, despite the daily presence of health organizations in the camps. He also added that the number of hospital patients exceeded the capacity of the county.

Dr. Atar pointed to poor sanitation conditions as a factor, since refugees are defecating in the open, and also failure to wash hands with soap, lack of environmental care and a shortage of latrines.

The doctor warned of the deterioration of the situation into a catastrophe and appealed to refugees to pay attention to the environment and wash their hands and use mosquito nets. He also called on the concerned authorities to not neglect the situation of the refugees.
