The number of children infected with measles in the disputed territory of Abyei has risen to about 50 confirmed cases, according to health authorities.

Last week, six cases of measles were confirmed.

Nyanawut Mayen Kuol, Minister of Health in Abyei, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the infected children were being treated at health facilities in the area.

“The confirmed cases are being treated in the area,” she said.

The government official further said the measles vaccination campaign was concluded on Tuesday.

Measles symptoms begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash that usually begins at the head and spreads to the rest of the body. A person can spread the virus before they show symptoms.

People are contagious with measles for up to four days before and up to four days after the rash appears. After someone is exposed to measles, illness develops in about one to three weeks.
