Blue Nile refugees at Yusif Batil camp in Maban county of Upper Nile state are suffering from more and more cases of Hepatitis E.

Medical sources in the region confirmed the still increasing occurrence of cases in Yusif Batil refugee camp and reports of some deaths. They added that many refugees have turned to traditional methods such as herbs to control the disease.

In the meantime, medical sources acknowledged to Radio Tamazuj that there is no vaccine or medication for treating Hepatitis E, cautioning refugees of the danger of the disease and urging them to use the prevention methods, such as washing their hands with soaps and not defecating in open spaces.

Late last month the federal health minister of South Sudan announced the death toll had reached 107 people in the four camps of Maban County. He put the number of cases in Yusif Batil camp at 2,986, saying the outbreak was “of grave humanitarian concern.”
