Aweil officials to move flood victims to prevent cholera outbreak

The Northern Bahr El Ghazal disaster management department met yesterday with other state authorities in Aweil and resolved to provide food items to flood victims and relocate them to Riang Aluelweng.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday the state humanitarian disaster management director Aguer Doordit said: "NGOs went to register the flood victims today and we found a place called Riang Aluelweng where we intend to relocate them. We want to deploy them there (Riang Aluelweng) tomorrow and start digging toilets and boreholes because where they are currently (in water) may cause them cholera."

Doordit said the flood has destroyed 1500 households and left 1820 persons homeless.

In response to the crisis the state council of ministers met yesterday, including officials from the ministries and departments of humanitarian affairs, infrastructure, agriculture and disaster management. They resolved to provide settlement and food items to flood victims within five days, according to Doordit.

Asked if the victims would be compensated, Doordit said: "We shall compensate them because it is in line with the land policy."

The senior official also mentioned the occurrence of cholera and compensation of the victims but did not mention about health services and properties compensation.
