Adult education launched in Torit prison

Prisoners at Torit main prison will now access adult (alternative) education after it was introduced to the facility on Monday.

The program supported by a local organization called Prime Africa targets uneducated adults and juveniles in the prison.

Reverend Pastor Luka Odong, a teacher at the prison told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the program offers four levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 each representing two classes from class 1 to class 8.

“The beneficiaries of this program are the juveniles, then at the same time people who are serving long sentences will also benefit,” he added.

Odong is urging both national and non-governmental organizations to support the program which he says is important for change in the society.

“We need to join hands together to change the community. If you change the mindset of an individual through education so you have changed the society,” he said.

Odong noted that the teachers in the program are working for free but need motivation. He revealed that the first batch will sit the national primary leaving examinations this year, adding that 31 children aged between 14 and 18 are enrolled in the program.
