Authorities in Abyei say they are working to develop the area after it was destroyed by war last year.

Displaced citizens and refugees that left Abyei when the Sudanese army invaded in 2011 are beginning to return, motivated by the promise of development.

The minister for infrastructure said they are planning to establish basic services such as schools, healthcare centres, roads and clean water sources.

Residents of Abyei began returning to the area after Ethiopian peacekeeping troops were deployed.
