The Commissioner for Mundri East County in South Sudan's Western Equatoria State has accused forces loyal to the rebel National Salvation Front (NAS) of attacking the Lanyi and Jambo areas of the county on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuji on Tuesday, Commissioner Margret Fozia Emmanuel said, as a result, four people were injured and three civilians abducted. 

"In Jambo, one policeman was injured and a civilian who was coming from Rumbek going to Juba was also injured. Again they attacked Lanyi and injured two others. So the residents were scared because of the gunshots sound, many run from their homes. I have told the chiefs to inform people not to run away from their homes," she said.

According to the commissioner, the attackers were repulsed by government soldiers.   

She called for the release of the abductees whose whereabouts remain unknown.

"In the morning on Monday during the attacks in Jambo a motorcycle was burned and the three people who were traveling were abducted. I want to appeal to the abductors to release the civilians because they were going to see their father who has been sick, the Archbishop Dr. Samuel Peni," she appealed.

Efforts to reach the NAS spokesperson to respond to the allegations were unsuccessful.
