SOUTH KORDOFAN - 13 Feb 2013

37 dead and many more displaced in S. Kordofan

Attacks last week by a militia based on the border and opposed to the South Sudanese government are reported to have resulted in 37 dead, dozens injured and many more displaced within South Kordofan.

Wounded patients are said to be receiving treatment at Abu Jubeiha hospital while the displaced fled the Jadida Abu-Nawara area and are traveling to Altartar, Altadamun, Sirajiya up to Abu Jubeiha province.

“Up to now more than 8 thousand people have evacuated their homes and others are still fleeing to the neighbouring areas as they are really affected by the militias’ attacks which killed 37 civilians which is a large number,” claimed a source who spoke with Radio Tamazuj.

The source further acknowledged that only national organizations, unable to provide the necessary humanitarian assistance, are assisting those displaced in the area.  The Sudanese government has refused international humanitarian assistance offered to those affected by ongoing fighting in South Kordofan.

Sudanese rebel group, SPLA-N, earlier this week accused militias who are supported by the Sudanese government and hostile to the South Sudan government of killing 17 civilians in South Kordofan.
